At €600 the MEW 202 costs what two of the entry machines on this page cost together, and the extra money buys one capability: pulsed transfer, with synergic programs for aluminium and a connector for a spool gun.
What pulse is for
In ordinary short-arc MIG, the wire touches the pool, shorts, and the current spikes to clear it — hundreds of times a second. It works, it is noisy and it spatters. Pulsed MIG instead alternates between a peak current that detaches one droplet cleanly and a low background current that keeps the arc alive without adding heat. Less heat means thin material does not warp or fall through, and the bead comes out even.
That matters most on aluminium, which conducts heat away fast and then collapses suddenly once it is hot. It is also why the welds on this machine’s listing look like TIG welds: double pulse gives the regular ripple that people photograph.
The spool gun connector
Aluminium wire is soft enough to buckle behind the drive rollers when pushed down a four-metre liner — the classic bird’s nest. A spool gun puts a small spool in the torch handle so the wire only travels a few centimetres. This machine has the interface for one. That is not a feature you use on day one, and it is the difference between a machine that can be made to weld aluminium properly and one that cannot.
The rest of the specification
Everything else is competent rather than remarkable: 2T/4T trigger modes, DC lift TIG, and a stick mode with hot start, arc force, anti-stick and VRD. That last one — voltage reduction device — holds the open-circuit voltage low until you strike, which is a real safety feature when you are welding damp, sweating or in a confined space.
The torch is an MB 24 on a Euro connector, so consumables are standard parts. Wire from 0.8 to 1.2 mm, D100 and D200 spools, 11.8 kg on the bench.

What does pulse actually do?
It switches the current between a high peak that detaches a droplet of wire and a low background that lets the pool cool slightly. The result is a controlled transfer with far less heat into the workpiece, which is what stops thin aluminium from collapsing and gives the stacked-coin appearance people associate with TIG. Double pulse modulates that rhythm again, and it is largely why the bead looks the way it does.
Do I need the spool gun as well?
For aluminium beyond short runs, effectively yes. Aluminium wire is soft: pushed down four metres of liner it buckles behind the drive rollers and birds-nests. A spool gun carries a small spool in the handle, so the wire travels a few centimetres. The interface being present on the machine is what makes that upgrade possible later — many machines in this price range have no such connector.
